There are two books I would like to talk about this week. The first is All New Wolverine. The first issue was very good. It not only set up the first arc but also gave new readers a look into X-23; both who she is and her past. I love this character and enjoyed this book greatly. We also get to see a new love interest who is also her partner. I think even after just the first issue we should stop referring to Laura Kinney as X-23 and start referring to her as Wolverine.
Carnage #1 is a bit of a different story. The stuff that has to do with Carnage and his non-symbiote form Kletus Cassidy is very good. I am a huge fan of the character. The plot parts that do not have carnage in them are necessary but not very interesting. Eddie Brock reappears in this issue and doesn't do much. Hopefully we will see him in the future as 'Toxin'.
Alright everyone, I figure this is a good opportunity to talk about some of these books and why I am picking up more in the series. Let's start with the new Captain America. I read the first issue and it was okay. The story is very political and that is what makes it feel the most like Captain America. Let's be clear here though, this does not feel like a Captain America story. Sam Wilson is a much different character than Steve Rogers in every way from beliefs to actions. Sam is the Falcon he just has a shield now and a fancy costume. I am interested in seeing how he develops. I have his first run before this 'reboot' and I actually enjoyed that arc much better. That being said, I can only hope we get back to that. Marvel is doing their thing with this book tying in issues like immigration and left vs right political debates in just the first issue. I am not sure how much it adds to the story or how well it is weaved in.
I am going to be completely honest and tell you guys that I did not read the last run on Deadpool. I know, how could I do that?!?!? Well, I have read the older trades and such but Deadpool went much of the way that Harley Quinn went. Once they were overly popularized they honestly lost something. That being said, the first issue of the new series of Deadpool was not bad. I wouldn't say it was great or even a must read but it was on par for Deadpool. The last book I would like to talk about is Uncanny Inhumans. For those who don't know I love the Inhumans. Black Bolt is one of my favorite comic book characters and has been for quite a while. This book had everything going for it. It was written by Charles Soule who is amazing and it brought Black Bolt back to the forefront, a characteristic missing from the still great Inhuman series that preceded this. This book kind of just summarized some of the events from that series while bringing back characters such as Flint, Dante, Iso, and Reader and introduced the new character Grid. We also bring in the Beast who has a unique job and Johnny Storm shows up and surprises us. I do not want to spoil anything but his appearance and actions were interesting. The status quo is different know and I am excited for the future of this series.
Hello fellow Nerds!
This week I am going to discuss some of the choices because there are a lot of number 1's up there! The first pick All New All Different Avengers is one that I am very excited for. If the amazing cover art wasn't enough to get you I imagine the line up is. The new Thor joins the team and if you aren't sure who it is yet I won't spoil it here. We also get Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales who is Spider-Man now, Nova and Vision, Iron Man, and Sam Wilson's Captain America. This team seems very strong and I can't wait to see all of the different dynamics between the characters. I am curious if this Nova will be the Sam Alexander who was created for the Ultimate Spider Man television series. I think that would be an interesting take. If the line-up doesn't get you interested, Mark Waid helming this series should do it all. If you haven't read his run on Daredevil, do yourself a favor and pick it up. The trades could be found at local comic book stores like the one we go to here in the Elk Grove Sacramento area, Metropolis Comix. All New Wolverine is actually a very intriguing title. X-23 is one of my favorite Marvel characters and I hope she can take over the mantle of Wolverine and make it interesting, She is his clone so I imagine this series will be amazing. Carnage is also a character I very much like. His recent limited series during the AXIS event was shockingly good. Illuminati is not the same Illuminati that I know and love. The prior team was my favorite Marvel team of all time. This new team is a group of villains. In this series we will see The Hood build a team featuring Titania, Enchantress, Mad Thinker, Thunderball, and Black Ant. The story will focus on this team just trying to survive in the new, different Marvel Universe. The final number 1 here is the Goddamned. This is Jason Aaron's new independent book through Image Comics. Jason Aaron is a fantastic writer and the story sounds very good. Here is the synopsis they give readers for the story: "Its 1655 years after Eden, and life on Earth has already gone to hell. The world of man is a place of wanton cruelty and wickedness. Prehistoric monsters and stone-age marauders roam the land. Murder and destruction are the rule of the day. Humankind is a failed experiment. This is life before the Flood. The story of man on the verge of his first apocalypse. Welcome to the world of THE GODDAMNED." Guys, CHECK THIS BOOK OUT! I think this could your next Walking Dead / Saga caliber story.
