It is a debate that has raged for a millennia. It started a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Or did it start in Middle Earth? or on Gallifrey? Or was it at Hogwarts? Wherever or however it happened, the debate is more prevalent today than ever before. We all know where this is going; Marvel vs DC!
The debate started on one fateful day when our lord and savior Stan Lee approached comic pioneer and DC Comics founder Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson about a problem he was having. You see, good old Stan wanted to know why all the kids in the day were worried about how 'on fleek' their shoes were and why they think MJ is the tops. Well you see, on that day Mr. Wheeler-Nicholson told Stan to stop it with his nonsense and that excelsior was an overused phrase that would be more appropriate if it came from a baby tortoise. Try getting that adorable picture out of your head.
The point is that now we are forced to participate or ignore the ever-present debate of Marvel vs DC. It is all because of the unwillingness of MWN to help Stan and this writers willingness to alter history to help make a point.
We must ask ourselves why we feel the need to argue and fight and pick and choose. Marvel has put out many movies and most are arguably good. DC had a fair set of Batman movies and a wildly controversial Superman movie in the recent years. Looking at the facts is clearly what we all do to pick sides, right? Well of course not. We a re people of emotion and strong ones at that. Therefore, how do we pick one or the other. When DC puts out a good trailer, we are clearly supposed to take its intent as "Fuck Marvel, DC is the best." But what happens if we love the trailer and love Marvel films. Where do we fall in this war of centuries? Do we lead with emotion or rationality. Is a story good because it adheres to the comics or because it makes us feel good? Can't both be true. A story can be awful narratively and we can love it and it can be perfect and we can hate it. Let us not take away someone else's joy for something that we think is shit.
This article is clearly not for those of you who feel the argument is juvenile or unnecessary. We here at Nerdy Boys Reviews love both Marvel and DC even though we each lean to one side or the other. The idea that our opinions make other opinions false or that we don't like them because of their opinion is absurd. It even extends beyond opinions.
Observe this debate from the great Iowa caucus in 2016 between DC fan Don 'SuperMan' Wayne and Marvel fan Bern 'WebSlinger' Stark.
Don: "We all saw that Batman vs Superman trailer. Am I right when I say Fuck Marvel!"
Bern: "Hold on, buddie. Go see Deadpool. DC who? We need to stop adhering to these large companies and their scumbaggery and instead put our faith in those like Ryan Reynolds and Disney"
Don: "Look, I'm sure you're a nice person but you are wrong. Marvel has put out mostly garbage. The plans for future DC films will blow marvel out of the water."
Bern: Marvel has a long line of successful films that have all been built into what they have now. They earned their spot. DC sucks and has nothing. They also clearly don't understand the characters in the films."
Don: "Fuck you!!!!!!"
Bern: "Fuck You!!!!!"
Or something like that. What dd this debate accomplish. Nothing. We still feel how we feel and managed to make ourselves look bad in the process. I wonder if this detracts from our ability to enjoy the great times we live in. I know it's cliche to say but can't we all get along? We can like or dislike things all we want but it takes no time and no energy to ignore others' comments rather than fight them. We, the Nerdy Boys, have spent a fair amount of time discussing what we like and dislike about various Marvel and DC films but we do it as part of our show and not as a parade of dominance on social media. We also don't think less of those who think differently than us.
This is a debate that will never end no matter what I say. So yes, I spent my time and energy writing this even though it may change nothing. However, it was fun and I hope you all enjoy it. Feel free to comment and add what you will below. thanks everyone and #StayNerdy!
